While iconic places in New Orleans like the French Quarter, City Park, and Uptown may be an easy pick for engagement photos – have you ever been to Algiers Point? Directly across the river just a 5 minute ferry ride away, is the gem of a neighborhood, Algiers Point, and may just be, in my (slightly biased opinion) the best hidden gem of New Orleans!
My husband and I happen to live in this neighborhood, and there are so many fantastic things about Algiers Point! Though the neighborhood is quiet, it is not short of incredible neighbors, very local places to eat and drink, levee access, unmatched views of the French Quarter and of course, classic New Orleans homes and architecture.
After living here for a bit, I had so many ideas for corners of the Point that would be perfect for New Orleans engagement photos. I was just waiting on someone to finally take me up on my offer to shoot here! So when Jessica + Jesse asked me if I’d be up for doing their engagement session on this side of the bridge, I was absolutely ecstatic!
Quiet engagement photos in Algiers Point
We met up with Jesse and Jessica at an Algiers Point staple, Barracuda, for a pre-sesison drink and taco! Barracuda is a staple for us here in the Point, and it’s especially convenient for us since we live on a few short walking blocks away from the place!
After we fueled up, we walked down Pelican to take advantage of the light pockets that illuminate the street just before sunset. One thing that makes Algiers Point so ideal for New Orleans engagement photos is that there are not a ton of super tall buildings/structures that block the light early! This means you get more dreamy light, and for longer!
At the time of the engagement session with Jesse and Jessica, it was springtime in New Orleans which means… jasmine blooms! Many neighbors have jasmine covering their fences facing the street, and it is such a treat to walk by when the jasmine is in bloom! There is nothing quite like the smell of jasmine when it first erupts!
What I really loved about working with Jesse and Jessica specially on this session is their willingness to trust me and my vision completely. This gave me the creative space and freedom to take risks, deliver both classic and artistic photos. These two photos below are a perfect example! On the left, an artistic take of the shot on the right – first being a vintage-looking black and white image, and the left being a classic, heartfelt image in color (that your parents are sure to love!). I love to give my couples both classic and artistic images in their gallery since both are equally important!
After spending some time on Pelican, I knew I wanted to take some photos in front of the ol Shoe Co. building that faces the river. In passing this spot daily on our personal walks, I knew it would look stunning with the golden light shining on it, and also give an opportunity for some classic, New Orleans architecture to make an appearance in their engagement photos!
As if there weren’t already a ton of reasons why a New Orleans engagement session is perfect to do in Algiers Point, having spots like this that aren’t overrun with tourists and people in general makes for a much more ideal engagement photo experience. I find a lot of times that couples love the idea of photos in iconic places like the French Quarter, but often underestimate how busy and distracting it can be.
More than anything, I want you to have a relaxed, intimate experience for your engagement session, and quiet spots like Algiers Point offers just that!
One other must-stop place for Jesse and Jessica was Old Point Bar. This is also an Algiers Point staple and a place that Jessica has memories of her own with her family! It was important to them to have the Old Point Bar make an appearance in their photos, and I found it a perfect way to infuse both personal significance for the couple and local flare!
Sunset Photos looking over the French Quarter
Perhaps my favorite thing about Algiers Point is the sunset view we have on this side of the bridge. Not only are we facing a better direction for viewing the sunset, you get to see it set behind the French Quarter. It doesn’t get much better than watching a beautiful sunset over Jackson Square, especially when you can hear the music of the Quarter playing – even from across the river! It’s night like these that make Algiers Point not only the perfect spot to end a New Orleans engagement session, but to live!
